A great Series so far
Halfway over (Dodgers' version) or just getting started (Yankees' version)?
I know what this looks like, but it’s NOT an endorsement of the Yankees in any way, shape, or form. It’s simply an acknowledgement that I visited the new Yankee Stadium back in 2015, meaning that I’ve somehow been there more recently than the World Series has. All that changes tonight, though, when the series resumes in New York, with the Dodgers holding a 2 games to 0 lead so far in the best-of-seven-games series.
I was wearing a Chicago Blackhawks hat in the picture, because they were still in the midst of a championship run during the previous decade, which now seems like a long time ago. That smiling guy from nine years ago has changed a lot since then, too. Nine years can change everybody’s life in some form or fashion, but time seems to start speeding up after a certain point. Perhaps having a big milestone birthday had something to do with it (and no, I won’t mention exactly which one it was, either).
The point is, that guy hadn’t yet seen the one thing that he felt like he needed to see if he was going to die a happy man. And the following year, it happened and it was every bit as amazing as he had hoped it would be. It was so good, in fact, that baseball might not ever again have the same level of meaning once that was finally out of the way.
To be clear, this year’s Dodgers-Yankees World Series is a step in the right direction—especially when Dodger Stadium still looks largely as it did back in the 1970s—but unless there’s a Game seven with a nail-biting conclusion this year, it still might be something of a letdown in the end. We’ll see what still lies ahead. At least that stupid “runner-on-second-at-the-start-of-extra-innings” rule has gone away for now. That can only help.
Until next time….
Rob, I wasn’t gonna add on to our recent comment thread, but since you posted this, I’ll mention it here. Your hat tip to enjoying the series in that thread was rattling around my own post-milestone(s) head when I finally had a chance to sit down Friday night, leading me to see if the game was on. Picking up in the 6th, I was treated to a hell of a spectacle! Nice on-field interview by Freddie to top it off — Hat tip to you, Rob!
