The recent stunt of loading six females onto a phallic rocket and then blasting them into—space? maybe—for a few moments was just simply dumb. The amount of money that was spent for women of wealth and privilege to cosplay as astronauts for a few minutes could have been spent fixing the problems here on this earth, instead. It’s a pity that they weren’t, but then again human nature is terribly flawed, and it always will be.
On this Earth Day, it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on the lack of respect shown to this planet, from the polluters who dump poison into our air and water, to the idiots who believe that colonizing Mars is ever going to happen. There is no Planet B, and we should stop trying to pretend there is.
Our world has served us well for billions of years, but it’s also in trouble, as the melting icecaps and raging wildfires and extreme drought conditions will attest. We can all stop and admire a sunset—that’s an easy thing to do—but when it comes to reducing our use of plastics or anything else that requires some behavioral changes, well, that’s asking a lot.
The trendlines that we’re on just aren’t sustainable, and we should all understand that by now. Here’s hoping that we’ll get it figured it out, and soon.
