This group consists of major league ballplayers who appeared on a trading card (99% of which were issued by Topps, but there are also a few exceptions out there) by himself (i.e., no “Rookie Outfielders of 1974” or cards of that nature) and subsequently passed away between the ages of 70 and 79 (just like Jimmy Buffett, who passed away at the age of 76).
There are currently 120 players who fit this description, and their ranks are bound to rise, as existing players in my card collection pass away. There are just under 500 living players in my collection who currently fall within this age range, and at least some of them will end up here, eventually.
Doing this keeps baseball alive for me, in all of its pre-interleague-play, DH-confined-to-the-American-League, and Colorado-Miami-Arizona-and-Tampa-Bay-free-glory.
Montreal and Oakland were still big league cities, Seattle and Toronto were new expansion teams, Hank Aaron and Bobby Murcer were alive and playing the game, and an ordinary fan like me didn’t know anything about WAR or slash lines, and had no idea that anyone would ever bother to count how many pitches that a pitcher had thrown.
15-inning games were still possible and batting gloves were just coming into style, while baserunning gloves were nowhere to be seen. And guys named Dave and Mike and Tom were commonplace in big league dugouts, too.
That was the game I once fell in love with, and will probably never get to see again. This is all I can do to keep the sabermetricians and the multi-millionaire middle relievers at bay, at least in this tiny little corner of the internet. Somebody should be doing this, right?
